Event Details

Join us for the BirmingHelles release, a BHAM brewery collaboration craft beer.

Along with Trim Tab, Birmingham District, Back Forty, and Uproot, we’ve crafted a Munich Helles made with malt from the Riverbend Malt House.

What makes this such a special collab? It’s not only crafted with a custom malt, but the barley used to create that malt is also grown right here in Alabama at WK Farms.

This is a limited, Taproom-only release. So join us and be among the first to try the BirmingHelles!

Crafted with grains malted at Riverbend Malt House, this event signifies the first time breweries in the Southeast have joined together to brew a craft beer with local malt produced at the Southeast’s first craft malt house with barley grown by a farmer in Hamilton, Alabama.

On Thursday, January 26, four local Birmingham breweries (Trim Tab, Birmingham District, Back Forty, and Uproot) joined together at Cahaba Brewing Company to brew a Munich Helles. The specific craft malt will lend attributes of bread crumbs, honeysuckle, melon, and sugar cookie notes to the finished product. A beer for beer lovers, the German-style helles is a malt-accented lager beer that balances a pleasant malt sweetness and body with floral Noble hops and restrained bitterness. It will be available to the public on draft in the Cahaba Brewing Company Taproom in early to mid-March.

So what is craft malt? According to Riverbend Malt House, malt is the soul of beer and spirits. It is created by steeping, germinating, and kilning small grains. Malt is the primary flavor agent in beer that contributes the sugars necessary for fermentation.
